Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about DebuNK, our data sources, methodology, and how to use the platform.

What is DebuNK?

DebuNK is a macroscopic analysis platform that continuously collects articles, images and video output from authoritarian regimes (North Korea, Iran, Russia, China) and makes them accessible on one platform. We enable users to identify propaganda narratives, analyze messaging patterns, and gain insights into regime decisions and ambitions.

Why focus on macroscopic analysis rather than individual articles?

Authoritarian media is highly censored and individual articles are permeated with lies and half truths, rendering them useless for analysis. However, propaganda always aligns with official policy. Macroscopic analysis of the entire media landscape identifies narratives pushed, angles focused, and information omitted—lending unique insights into a regime's past decisions, current state, and even future ambitions.

Who is DebuNK designed for?

DebuNK is aimed at scholars, journalists and foremostly decision makers in the security, defence and intelligence industry. We serve government organizations, defense industry analysts, policy research institutions, academic researchers, and investigative journalists.

What capabilities does DebuNK provide?

DebuNK provides a multi-dimensional filter functionality for in depth article and media search. That search selection then can be used in a timeline analysis, and an interactive geographic displays. More advanced tools are under development.

Which countries does DebuNK cover?

DebuNK currently focuses on North Korean state media with over 17,000 analyzed articles. Coverage is expanding to include Iran, Russia, and China state media sources.

How often is content updated?

We continuously monitor state media sources for new publications. Our system automatically collects and indexes new articles as they are published.

Does DebuNK spread authoritarian propaganda?

No. DebuNK does not intend to uncritically disseminate the ideas and ideologies of any regime. Instead we make the mechanisms and dynamics of targeted disinformation by state players public and scrutable. We seek to contribute to a better informed public, growing resilience against attempts of interference by adverse players.

Can I download articles or data?

Articles can be viewed through our web interface with full metadata and analysis. For large-scale data access or research partnerships, please contact us for information about specialized data access options.

Is DebuNK fully operational?

DebuNK is still under construction. The platform currently provides search, timeline, and mapping capabilities for North Korean state media.
