History of Winter Solstice

The winter solstice is one of folk holidays of our people from of old.

The winter solstice is the 22nd of the 24 seasonal divisions according to the lunar calendar.

The day is shortest and the night longest on the winter solstice from the viewpoint of astronomical meteorology.

Our ancestors thought that the New Year began on the winter solstice and set it a folk holiday.

It is one of our folk customs to cook and eat adzuki bean gruel on the winter solstice. The gruel is called "Tongjijuk".

Our people have looked back on the whole year, eating adzuki bean gruel and shared it with their neighbors promoting harmony among themselves.

The custom has been inherited as required by the times by our people.
